Cat Behavior Consultation Services

Is your cat acting in ways that leave you confused or frustrated? Do you need the help of an expert to troubleshoot a specific issue? How can you determine if your cat’s behavior is “normal” or a concern that needs addressing?

We now have two behavior consultants to
help you with all your behavior needs!

If you have an Internet connection we can help! We work virtually with people WORLD-WIDE and can do in-home consultations in the Portland, Oregon, and Southwest Washington areas.

Which consultation is right for you?

STANDARD CONSULTATION

The Standard Consultation is a one-hour video session. We work from the description of the issue that you provide when booking your appointment and the questions we ask during the session. This is not a deep dive. Standard consultations are best for single issues or situations where you have a fairly clear idea of what’s happening and why.

Examples:

  • One or two unwanted behaviors like counter surfing, scratching furniture, or being disruptive at night
  • Your cat is fearful of specific situations or things (carrier, visitors, etc.)
  • Transitioning a cat from outdoors to indoors
  • Excessive vocalizations

Standard Consultations are also great for single educational topics such as:

  • Preparing to adopt a cat
  • Preparing in advance to introduce a new cat to the family
  • Preparing to bring home a baby
  • Training techniques
  • Play and enrichment
  • Cooperative care for husbandry or medical care
  • Fostering cats
  • Senior cat care
  • Recovery from surgery (from an environmental and ease-of-care perspective – we are not medically trained)

FULL-SERVICE CONSULTATION PACKAGE

The Full-Service Consultation Package is a deep dive. We look not just at one issue but at the full scope of your cat’s environment and situation. You’ll fill out a detailed questionnaire that allows us to prepare before your first session and develop a multi-layered plan. A variety of elements are considered, including other pets, people in the home, environment and resources, history, schedule/routine, and more. Two sessions allow us to implement tactics, see how the situation changes, and make adjustments to achieve desired goals.

The Full Service Consultation Package is ideal for clients who want to address multiple issues or those who have complicated cases with or without clear triggers such as:

  • A cat-to-cat introduction that is not going well
  • House-soiling (i.e., eliminating outside the litterbox and/or spraying)
  • Aggression towards other pets or humans
  • On-going fear or anxiety (skittishness, hiding, aggression, overgrooming behaviors, pica, etc.)
  • Multiple unwanted behaviors like counter-surfing, excessive vocalization, scratching furniture, etc.
  • One or more of the above concerns

If you’re unsure how complex your case is, or if the Full-Service Consultation Package isn’t feasible, you can absolutely start with a Standard Consultation. We’ll focus on the tactics most likely to make an impact. You can then book additional standard consults if needed or upgrade to a Full-Service Consultation. Just be aware that issues such as soiling, difficult introductions, and moderate-to-severe aggression are generally multi-faceted and we tend to see better results with more than one session.

House-soiling is a particularly challenging issue. It’s difficult to say whether soiling can be resolved with a Standard Consultation or if it requires the Full-Service Consultation Package. If the soiling is a recent problem and/or you feel confident you know what triggered it, a Standard Consultation may allow us to get to the bottom of the issue. However, if the soiling has been going on for a while and/or you don’t know what’s causing it, you might consider the Full-Service Consultation Package. There’s a lot of detective work and testing involved and that is difficult to do with a single session.  But if you have any questions about which service you should start with, let us know!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a minor issue and a complicated one?

Any time more than one cat is involved or if there’s more than one issue of concern, things get more complicated and require more time and patience to resolve. If you need help determining which consult would be appropriate for your situation, please contact our team. If you just can’t decide, we highly recommend booking a standard consult to see if you click with one of our consultants – you can always upgrade to a full consultation later.

I'm getting ready to adopt a new cat/kitten, and I want to get started right, do you have a service for that?

Yes, please choose the full-service consultation package. We can help you integrate your new cat or kitten into your household successfully. If you are at the very beginning of your cat adoption journey, and just need some guidance on where to start, and what to consider, we can help you with the standard consultation.

I'm not in the Portland/Vancouver area, can you help me?

Yes! We work with clients all over the world via Zoom video conferencing. Please reach out to our team if you have any concerns.

What if my cat's behavior doesn't change?

Cats are animals, and we have a limited amount of control over their behavior. Many undesirable cat behaviors take time and patience to correct – some are resolved more easily and quickly than others. There are a number of factors that can affect this, including your cat, the amount of time you can dedicate to resolving the issue, and many other aspects of your situation. But don’t worry if you need more than the three sessions included in the full-service package; that service can be extended in 30-day increments (including email support and another zoom meeting) if you need more time.
